Project COncept

Design and develop a mobile app and website that showcase the reflective nature of the universe. Through parallel observation, users can explore cosmic structures, astrophysics, and physical phenomena as they manifest both in space and here on Earth.

01. Problem Statement

With the increasing presence of social media, users are less exposed to educational content and true information. There was a need to make educational content enjoyable and relevant. That's how Cosmic Eye was born - an app and site designed to translate complex, sophisticated subjects into experiences and observations the user seeks in the real-world.

02. Research & user insights

Before the design process began, competitor analysis of popular social media apps was conducted to understand the current market and identify gaps. Surveys were also distributed to potential users to gather insights into their preferences and needs. Key findings revealed that users prioritized ease of browsing navigation, the ability to share experiences socially, and digestible information.

03. WirefrAMING & PROTOTYPE

The design process began with creating low-fidelity (lo-fi) wireframes to establish the overall structure and flow of the app. These early wireframes focused on laying out key elements and basic navigation for the profile and home page. The goal was to create a user-friendly matrix structure, and visually appealing concept exploration with social interaction.

Once the basic structure was refined, the lo-fi wireframes were developed into high-fidelity (hi-fi) wireframes. At this stage, more attention was given to visual details such as typography, color, and interactive elements like the ‘like’ button and search filters. These hi-fi wireframes were then turned into clickable prototypes, allowing for user testing and feedback. The prototype helped identify any usability issues and refine the user flow, ensuring a smooth transition from wireframe to a functional design.

03. User testing

After the initial prototyping phase, user testing was conducted with potential users to gather insights on usability and overall experience. Feedback revealed that while users appreciated the app’s design, there were areas that needed improvement, particularly in personalizing navigation.

  • A search bar allowed users to explore direct interests.

  • A "like", or starred, feature allows for recommended content, further personalization, and social feedback amongst users.

  • Minimal buttons are visible to enable intuitive movements.

  • Privacy Settings granted users control over personal accounts.

04. Final Design & Features

The final version of Cosmic Eye includes a sleek interface with intuitive navigation, a educational experience, and robust social features. Users can easily find and explore subjects while staying connected with their community.

cosmic profile.png

The positioning of each icon on the Profile page was designed with intentionality and ease of use in mind. By leveraging users' familiarity with common UI patterns, actions are placed in intuitive, easily discoverable locations. The edit pen is positioned directly next to the profile image, the settings gear is placed in the top-right corner—consistent with standard account page conventions. This thoughtful arrangement ensures an intuitive experience, allowing users to effortlessly set, update, and validate their usernames.

cosmic library.png

Users are equipped with all the tools to curate their own personalized library, complete with custom albums, cover images, and titles. This feature is perfect for those who enjoy organizing information, personalizing their experience, and creating collections that are easy to revisit.

cosmic concept.png

The concept page blends captivating imagery with compelling text, creating an engaging and almost "invincible" visual flow. The layout is designed to draw readers in, encouraging them to explore and learn more about the concept they’ve come across. The content provides a thick stroke of knowledge on the new subject while inviting them to interact with the concept in a way that transforms the experience from educational to socially shareable, immediately resonating with their everyday lives. To further foster curiosity, a “Dive Deeper…” section was added, providing a gateway for users whose interest extends beyond the app's surface.

cosmic search.png

The search bar is intuitively positioned in the upper-right corner, providing users with quick and easy access to search anything that comes to mind. It supports a variety of queries, including questions, topics, and image descriptions. To spark further curiosity, a suggested explore feature is displayed, showing a variety of discoverable topics.

05. conclusion

Cosmic Eye effectively bridges the gap between space exploration and social interaction. By making complex topics relevant to users' everyday lives, the learning experience becomes more engaging and enjoyable. Future features, such as AR integration and custom educational videos, could further enrich the user experience.
